I thought I would start what could be a fun thread to see what's under the hood in your rat.

What engine?
What did it originally come out of?
What cam shaft are you using?
Intake/exhaust duration at .050" lift?
LSA?
Do you prefer or smooth or rough idle?
Have pictures to share?
Anything else you want to add about it or what you've done to it please share!

I'm running a 350 chevy from a '69 Pontiac 2+2.
The cam is from Summit Racing & the model is from their street & strip line.
Intake/exhaust duration is 218
LSA is 110
I love the sound of a loopy, rough idle but not too radical as I need to keep the fillings in my teeth. I've rebuilt the entire engine myself & replaced all internal parts with new parts from summit racing but in stock specs. Lots of power under the hood but maybe next time I'll step a little outside of the box.

In my 27 I have a 90 Mustang 5.0 that is running a Scat 331 stroker kit. Balanced, 30 over , Edelbrock Performer RPM aluminum heads, Ford Racing X 303 roller cam, Harlan Sharp roller rockers, and two fours on an Offy intake. Cam is very lumpy, comes in at about 2500 and goes right to 8000 if I forget to shift at 7000.

My rpu has a 394 Olds that is 30 over with a mild Crane hydraulic cam and three Rochester two barrels on an Offy intake. This one should idle pretty smooth and the Olds has enough torque that it should be a good street motor.

My 40 Pontiac came out with a flathead 6 and now is sporting a 73 455 HO Poncho, 750 HP Holley, vintage Holley Street Dominator with a 700r tranny.
The engines internals are just as it came out of the donor car. Idles like a highway patrol car

My '42 Chevy has a 455 Olds out of a '76 Olds 98. It is stock other than new timing chain and dual exhaust. I like a fairly smooth idle in my car, kind of a sleeper. I am a huge fan of big blocks, plenty of low end torque.

My Pontiac wagon has a '71 Olds 455 that was rebuilt in the early '80s. It has a long duration 'factory' Olds cam, probably a W-32 "the stick cam," that sounds really radical at idle, but since it has stock rockers, can't have a lot of lift.

This is an old-school hint, by the way. Run more duration, and a tight LDA (overlap) to get the sound, but leave the lift in the stock range, and you won't need to machine the heads for dual valve springs, run longer than stock valves, aftermarket rockers, custom length pushrods, etc.

For the S-10 project, I'm leaning towards the super oddball:

HI Everyone

I dont believe in big motors due to fuel consumption and current fuel prices...My rat rod has a 1976 Chevy Nova 250 cu. in. motor hooked to a 4 speed Chevy truck trans....not sure how it is gonna work out but I am hoping it will be OK on mpg's and with the truck being so light...should be able to keep up with traffic too...

'70 model Ford 429 from a '70 Merc Marquis. It came out of the Merc around '84 and went to a '79 F-150. Stayed there until '99, went to a '83 F-150. From there, into a '70 model AMC Rebel. Pulled it and tore it down around 2005. That was the first time it had been into. It sat in pieces a couple years until 2007 when I started building it for what wound up being a VW rat. It's got ported DOVE heads, 10.75:1 KB .030 pistons, Crane 302*/ .610 lift cam, (good radical idle), Edelbrock Victor intake w/ Holley 750 double pump, GM HEI style ignition, home modified BBC Hedman headers, ARP bolts internal, Melling oil pump and Holley elec fuel pump. C-6 auto from the '79 F-150 rebuilt by me. (don't how how that's going to work yet) Currently has a stock 428 convertor cause that's all I could afford.

We are running a nice cheated up 400 SBC out of a short circle track race car. Bought it used so I have no idea what cam it has, but it sounds pretty healthy.

The 6 old stromberg 97s and x-1 intake give it some spice and the high stall converter make it interesting, since it really likes to spin....

My 34 Ford Pick Up is running a SBC, a 262 from a 1975 Monza, a Turbo 350 automatic trans, and a 12 bolt posi 1969 Chevelle rear end.

This is what the engine looked like a couple of months ago when I bought the truck,........and how it looks now.
