Just caught up on some post and thought I'd stick some pics up too of my shop! My 29 sedan is behind s-10 bed then the wifes 47 IH then Ratrodney's 54 IH my son's 53 Nash,Myoldtrucks 52 ford and the 97 s-10 that I am building for a customer. And all the rest of my mess!

I'm impressed with the garages you guys have , it makes building a lot more fun when you have room to open a car door without hitting the wall !

I just built a 40x60 shed and its full already. I have a 20x15 heated area that I got concrete in before winter. Luckly I can build my car at work, in a heated shop with a shear,break, and all the welders I could ever need. I can not wait to get mine all insulated and cemented out. You all have nice shops hope to join your ranks some day.

Agree mostly with DJ3100. I had a 2000 sq ft shop in Palisade, CO. wasn't well organized and seemed like I spent my life walking from one end to the other. what ever I needed was always 40' away.
Shop here in AZ is 30 x 50' with 12' walls (metal frame and sheeting) insulated with metal panels on interior walls. It has a 15 x 50' covered outdoor work area on the South side with partial walls at top (shade) Works great in Arizona, get sun to warm up with in winter and complete shade with a Porta-Cool in the summer,
Inside of shop has heat pump A/C. Use 2' wide pallet racks to ceiling on end walls and one in center. Have separated work areas based on type of work. Outside is for plasma, cutting, grinding, forging, bead blasting, some welding, etc, all the really dirty stuff. One half of the inside is fabrication area which has a 8x8' roll door front and back connecting to the outside work area and to the driveway in front where I can bring in steel, gas cylinders, parts. Other half is cleaner area and has the lift, lathe, mill and most of storage, with a 10' x 10' roll up door.
Been using it 5 years, and is just about (not quite) perfect for me. Also imbedded 4" channel in floor on 6' centers when concrete was poured. Seemed like a good idea, but have never used it.

I thought he asked for garage photos, these are more like machine shop photos. Seriously, ya'll have some very nice setups. As big and nice as you can afford would be a good rule of thumb. Just cause you don't think you need the space now, you might later.

My garage
I spent between $5,000 and $6,000 total adding onto my garage and pouring the patio part of the driveway.
that includes electrical and putting in a used furnace.
and it is sided with plywood not particle board.
I could have built the total square footage old and new all on the ground for less but i didn't have the room.
this is an example of maximizing my area and minimizing my profile.
the upper walls are only 5' tall but the ceiling is framed cathedral and has lots of headroom.
from the street the garage tucks in neatly behind the house and does not dominate the property
this is me upstairs before I filled it with junk

I have 8' on the north side of the garage and 3 foot on the back and on the south.
I added 12'x22' to a 22'x22' garage.
I also added a 23' x18' storage/workshop loft with stairs and cathedral cielings (oooh aaah)
as you can see I don't have alot of room to work...most times just enough
here I'm finishing up some cleaning where I went through everythign in the shop
Here is a cheat I came up with. it's an open wooden rack to store axles and stuff over the top of my air conditioning unit
sometimes there's wasted space you can take advantage of with a shelf.
The rack over the ac unit is actually a larger rack I cut down. It had joist hangers and spanned a one-car storage unit and was decked out in plywood.
the car fit under and I had 14'x12'x4' extra storage space out of that unit for things like fenders seats and boxes of stuff and still allowed me to get the car in and out and not dent it up by piling stuff on it
The property already had a waver to get a garage in the first place so I was restricted to 750 square feet maximum foot print.
I wanted to go 4 cars but could only go 3.
I let my neighbor park his pickup next to the garage between mine and his for good will. his yard is skinnier than mine.
I know I could have gotten alot more in a small town away from the city for the same money but my folks and brothers are here.
Also I was a trucker when I bought the place. if I was gone 3 months at a time like I was with being out in the country... I would have been cleaned out by meth heads and drunks the first year. here I have good neighbors and they watch each other.
first day moving in they came over and said "who are you? who else is coming or should be here? and I don't care what you do on your property so don't be worrying about what I do on mine and we'll get along just fine".
I shook their hands and said hello neighbors I think we'll be alright.

you can never build to big NEVER. if you can awash pit out side of shop with steamer,if you can width or length of shop outside concrete and roof open on 2 ends possible sand blaster. elect.110volt plugs every 10 ft.220volt each side of bldg 2 or 3 drops from ceiling . air outlet every 20 ft. around walls and covered out side needs plugs and light you need all the light you can afford on each door put double gates you can close and lockwhile doors are up, ice box, water. bathroom beer and sandwich stuff, intercom, with off switch. a no tresspassing sign i don't playwell with others SIGN you ready to go tools all you can afford a/c in office and abed nec. trailers tow vehicles now youi are more ready my 2 cents robertbandit[cl

i have a 20'x40' garage.
1st floor 20'x40'
2nd floor 20'x20'
attic 20'x40'
i dont have pics as of now but will take some for you. its 36' to the peek of the roof. i have stuff scattered from ground zero to the roof. its allways tight somewhere in my garage and it depends how i move stuff around to where it will be next. i need to add a main beam for the second floor so i can make it bigger and get bigger stuff up there like my quads.
the benches and shelving are great in your plans, but they will take up room quick and colect junk fast. i have 20' of work bench. about 3 times a year i can see the whole thing, the rest of the time its covered with something. motors, tranny's, car realated parts for a build will pile up fast.
our every day cars allways park out side because i dont have the room.
