I need some help figuring out what rack and pinion unit will adapt to my 78 Malibu ( G body ) front suspension. [S It's a front steer type so I'll need a rack from a front steer vehicle, saw a bunch at the boneyard today in various GM cars but realized later they were all rear steer units so they would move in the wrong direction.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and it has to be a power unit too, tired of armstrong steering.....

Shoulda read this one before the build thread. LOL S-10 manual box bolts right up and is smaller. I used one for mine and it isn't hard to steer at all. When I was searching when mine was an Olds they have a very small aftermarket power box used for drag racing. I'll see if I can find it again. I think it was on a G-body forum???

The S 10 is smaller but would stil be in the way not only of the fender, but it would actually protrude into the grille.
I considered going to a box that has a forward facing pitman arm so I could mount it behind the crossmember, but it would arc in the opposite direction of the stocker plus the pitman arm would end up right in the middle of the crossmember.
Looks like rack and pinion is the only way to go.....

There's a fella over at stovebolt.com that has designed a crossmember kit to install G-body front suspension under the Advance Design Chevy trucks...He uses gen 4 Camaro racks or Dodge Dakota racks. He also mentioned Ford Explorer racks from the early 2000's.

More info can be found at:

Go to the "Hi-Po Shop" forum and look for the "Metric GM suspension" thread.

Hope this helps.

Shea:)
