So I bought a 47 Chevy coupe that I had been watching for some time when the guy parked it out front of his garage I saw the for sale sign and the price was right. Pretty complete but motor is stuck, no problem I will drop in a small block and 350 turbo anyway. May rebuild the brakes and suspension or may subframe it, still thinking about this project. So anybody know where the VIN is on this model? I have a title but can't find the vin plate.

Nice buy, Fuzz. I've always liked the coupes from those years. Can't help you with the VIN. I was just thinking a few days ago you hadn't posted in awhile. Glad you are back.

Thanks for the welcome back, Bob...I went back to work for a few months but will retire again next week, then I'll have more time to spend with my internet family...:D

I thought the tag was right on the firewall on the ones i had. Hope it hasn't been removed. Good to see you back Fuzz.

Thanks Earthman....the plate on my firewall is only a patent number, model number and style. Maybe it should be but no apparent vin there...

according to my 1942-1948 shop manual. "Body style number, Serial Number, Trim number, and Paint combination number-Located on the front of the dash on the right hand side" "Or under the floor mat on the right side." By dash they mean firewall.

To further add to the confusion, I found an answer on the Google stating it was "on the door post between the hinges". Didn't say which door post. Could be hard to see as it could be covered with paint, it said.

If its on the door jam it will be the right door just above the lower hinge. Could GM have made it any harder to find?

Appreciate all the help. Only thing I found was this plate on the passenger side door post. It must be the vin plate but I can't read any numbers but I can fix that..:D
Thank guys..

My 48 Olds was on the drivers side a-post up along the window... They all just slapped 'em on wherever back then - every plant was basically on their own.
