I have "fuel tank envy", mine is only 11 gallons.

Tanks look good, Troy. You have the right attitude, when something goes wrong you just need to say "Oh well" and make a new part or fix the problem. Happens to all of us.

Does that gas tank sealer work with the new gasolines ok? I know some had issues but it sounds like yours is going to be fine.

Don

Thanks Don...I kicked the ground a little and gave a few four letter words to the walls, but in the end it is what it is...happened for a reason. I can also use the other tank for something else....maybe an emergency fuel storage for hurricane season.

I called and talked to Caswell and asked directly about different types of fuel and they said that it seals and holds them all. I have a few tests running where I put some of the excess into small plastic tubs. I put about a cup of regular gas in one and sealed with some plastic rap and a rubber band. I put paint remover in the second and alcohol in the third. I have them all sealed and tucked away in the garage. I'm going to check them in a month to see if there is any change in the sealer. I'll let everyone know the results.

Thanks Ty!

Finishing up some stuff before I break everything down. Got the steering column bolted into place...had to "manipulate" the flange that bolts to the firewall. Ended up cutting it from it's orginal location and moving it back a little then welded it back in place. Took a long time, but I'm glad it's done! o

Also got my exhaust turn outs. I ordered some flanges that I will weld to these so I can run block-offs with a full exhaust as well. I slid them on the headers to get a look at how they might turn out. Out to the side or pointed down?

Troy, it is shaping up nicely. Are you going to leave the trans tunnel open on the rear?

Can you tell me where you got the headers? Part number, etc.?

Thanks Bob! I still got some work to do on the trans tunnel...going to "seal" up the interior the best i can...sheet metal work is my weakness so I put that stuff off as much as I can.:D

The headers are from Schoenfeld...link is below...got them from summit (second link). Can't remember where I got the turn outs...I'll look to see if I can find them.

Troy, thanks for the header information. Wish I would have known about them for my Fiat. I had looked at the Schoenfeld web site but somehow missed the street rod headers.

When do you anticipate being on the road?

Wouldn't it be dull if....

We all built them the same.....I think the floor and tunnel look pretty darn nice....JMHO.....[cl

No problem...it took me a while to find them on their site as well. They are not a part of the normal catalog. I'm hoping to be on the road by the second week of March. Got everything that I need to get it running...just need more time to spend with it.

just finished my 48 IH last spring. Drove it to Detroit on Hot Rod Magazine power tour and to Biloxi for Cruisin the Coast car show last year. Put 6000 miles on it last year. You can see my construction photos at daytonagary dot com 283 engine, 700r4 transmission

Hey Gary,
Lots of similar stuff between our builds! Your truck is awesome...great job on it! What did you use to skin the door panels? Did you have any troubles on your long trips? Also...who did you use to cut your glass?

I'm heading out West late spring this year...build a teardrop trailer to tow along as well.

Thanks,
-Troy

for inside door panels we went to home depot and got some thin 4x8 sheets of bathroom wall panels that normally is used around a bath tub. read an article last week where they used aluminum panels like is used to skin late model dirt car bodies. will try that next time as it is thinner material. Put over 6000 miles on the little truck in 6 months last year. no major problems. tightend an air conditioning belt and rebalance front tires, that is about it. I dropped truck off to local glass shop who has a specialist in cutting custom auto glass and he put all 4 peices of glass in. I used universal street rod rubber around the front window and 50 ford rubber around the rear window. Cost was $700 total. Side windows roll up and down just like new as my mechanisms were locked up with corrosion but no wear on them so after cleaning and oiling I used them instead of changing to electric windows. Started with the truck I bought for $650 and a 88 Camaro Z-28 I bought for $900. sold lots of parts off both cars so probably had less than $900 spent starting out. used transmission, driveshaft, rear end, rear suspension, seats steering column, shifter and more out of the Camaro. If you have any other questions email me as I don't check this message board regularly.

got to love this and all ih builds ! [cl keep up the good work ![dr

Thanks Jack!

Went to the junk yard yesterday and picked up some stuff. Love that place. I could have spent all day there. I picked up a tans cooler, some hood latch stuff that I'm going to use on the tonneau cover and some other stuff that will be revealed later.

Got some pictures of where I'm at with the tonneau cover. Also a look at what I'm going to use on top of it as well.

Got the hinges and struts done for the tonneau cover. The struts are a lot stronger than I was planning for. Basically that thing is like a catapult! The extra weight of the wood won't make much difference. Not really worried about it unless I don't pay attention and get knocked out from it!:eek::eek:

Also got some square tubing for the bed rails. Was thinking about using some round tubing, but I think the square looks good!

I'd go with square too. That's basically how they were originally. Love the bed cover. That will probably be the last thing i work on. I'll update and post pics tomorrow sometime. Looking good!

Wow Troy the bed is looking good! I kinda like the square tube too......a little different than everyone else. The wood might help more than you think with the 'chin slapper'......or if not you could add some thick plate corner braces at the rear for a little extra weight.

header flanges and cutouts

Got the flanges and block outs from Ron Pope at EZtbucket.com. There is a kit that you can buy from summit, but it only comes with one flange and one block out per side and I needed an extra flange for the turn out. Speedway sells the gaskets so I got them and called Ron to give him the measurements. He cut everything out and had them to me in a few days. Cheaper than the summit kit and I got the extra flanges for the turn out.

I could have gone with some off the shelf flanges, but I really like these!

Thanks Ty...I'm thinking the square is the way to go...and I think you're right about them being original. I'll have the wood attached before the end of the week.

Thanks Snake! Good idea about adding some weight with the corner braces...I'm going to do it. Thanks!
