I used a GM column on a similar style column. I took it out through the bottom then cut the shaft. Then I took it to a machine shop to drill and shape it to match the bottom of the GM column, it was cheap to do. I had the round shaft machined to have two flat sides (U shaped) and it mounted...

My '42 Chevy has a 455 Olds out of a '76 Olds 98. It is stock other than new timing chain and dual exhaust. I like a fairly smooth idle in my car, kind of a sleeper. I am a huge fan of big blocks, plenty of low end torque.
