Have to say I have anvil envy [dr:(

Thanks Old Iron. This has been a different build for me. She's throwing lots of money at it that I don't have skimp and save for. Makes me wonder if the bills are getting paid.:confused::eek:

That old anvil was my Granddad's. He was an horse trader/breaker and mule skinner that delivered ice to all the homesteaders in the Fort Sumner and Elida, New Mexico area with a wagon and a team of mules. He also shoe'd horses for years. Lots of hammering has been done on that old anvil. I use it nearly every day.

He told me one time that he had the coolest job around in those days. He'd load his wagon that was insulated with saw dust at the ice house in Fort Sumner, throw a tarp over it and sit on top of the load to deliver it.

When he died 48 years ago I was helping my mom clean out his house and barn and I got his old anvil, an old safe that was buried under old horse blankets and mule harnesses and an old double barrel shotgun.

The old safe sat in my garage in two different houses for 5 years before my bride and I built our house where we are now.
I decided I would find some one that could open the safe and not destroy it. Found an old locksmith guy that said he could open it. He said I owed him $30 when he opened it. I told the old guy to give me the combination and lock it back up. After he was gone we opened it back up and Much to our surprise there was 8-$50 gold pieces and 32- $20 gold pieces in there with 2 Colt Peacemaker revolvers that were still loaded and in mint condition.

We still have the gold in a safe deposit box that will be split between our three kids when we are dead and gone. The revolvers are part of my most prized possessions. The safe and the anvil will be in the family forever I hope.

Sorry for rambling on but you triggered some fond memories.

very cool story about the safe and the anvil!
the peace makers would be in my prized possession also!!

You may have to give her a new name (Leonardo or Picasso)

She did a good job. More patience than me for sure.

It that door panel some of your work? I'm interested for sure.
