Been a few days since I updated anything. Got most of my steel on Tuesday, I will have to go back and get a sheet of 3/16 but I got enough to get really going. Took yesterday off from the project and spent this morning building the underside structure to make the tub more rigid and support the floor. I have not welded it to the body yet as I will also use it as the template for the actual floor. If everything goes well over the next few days, I can start building the frame this weekend.

Nice work [;)
Thats quit the tunnel [cl
==[P==[/QUOTE]

Yeah, the tunnel is way taller than it needs to be but, it will be at the perfect height for an armrest. The hoops are 1/8”x1” miles steel and it’s getting covered by 16ga. Went a bit thicker on this one because if a u-joint fails, I don’t want the driveshaft to come busting through like the kool-aid man.

Spent the day finishing up the tunnel and welded it to the body. Depending on how work goes tonight, I’ll see what I can get done tomorrow.

As a side note, back when I got my 31 Chevy, I had sold my 68 VW bug to a friend. Well, after 4 years he hadn’t done anything with it so when he said he was looking at selling it, I made a deal with him to buy it back. More than anything, I have an emotional attachment to this car. You see, I had originally bought it back in 2008 when I was stationed in NC. I drove it fairly reliably for about 3 years and put around 30k miles on it in that time. It was probably the ****tiest but most reliable car I had ever owned at the time. I regularly drove it to Raleigh, Winston-Salem, Myrtle Beach, etc. At the time, it was white with orange doors, a 1776, and had holes in the floors. But it was paid for and it was mine. After I got back from deployment I decided that it was time to fix her up as she should be but never got much further than taking her apart before I moved back to CA. Before moving to Montana, I replaced the floor pans, had the pan and suspension powder coated black, and rebuilt the steering. The pan is still, pretty much all brand new.

So, eventually, when I have time, I will turn back to the bug and get her resto-modded. This time, done how I wanted it to be 10 years ago. 1835cc engine, dual Weber carbs, Sunkist orange with blue pearl paint, and white interior.

Agree with Torchie. You could teach hot rod building JB, like several other 1st class builders on the site. A pleasure to see your work.

Thanks for the compliment burger but there’s a long way to go before I could ever teach anyone how to hot rod. Every build I do teaches me something new.

Over the last few days I’ve been working on the back end. Got the quarters welded back onto the body and cleaned up the lines a little bit. Mind you, I am a welder and diesel mechanic and no body man man by any means. Today I tackled some of the frame work for the rear. I’ll have to do some tweaking to get everything lined up right.

Enjoying the way this project is going together. A question, what do you use to bend square tubing?

I’m using a harbor freight tubing roller with a set of SWAG Off-road rollers for 3/4 and 1/2” square tubing. It’s not ideal for the sharper bends like 90s but it does the job.

It's looking great already! I'm guessing it will be a bit tricky to get pedals into. I'm excited to see how this turns out :)

I’m almost thinking of making it a right hand drive. There’s just a bit more space on the right side. Plus, I doubt anyone else in the competition is gonna build a right hand drive.
