Sorry to say I don't expect to fire it up 'till late spring :(. Hope to get all the fabrication and mock up assembly done by Christmas, followed by disassembly and finishing, painting etc. Lots of finish welding to do on the frame and underside of the body framing. Also have to go thru the engine (top end, gaskets, pump, etc., usual inspection and tweaking) before it gets fired up.

Boy, that looks good! You do stuff I would never even think to try. Following your thread is like going to fabrication school.

Thanks, that goes both ways -- I wouldn't even dream about doing 'glas work like on your Fiat.
More progress on the grille, made the center bar from 1/2" square SS, drilled and tapped the ends to bolt it in. Welded studs to the grille surround and bolted it to the shell. Also started making the frame that will have the grille bars welded to it, it will have tabs attatched to mount it from the backside.

I've got the 36 Chev truck grill that needs an insert. I'm looking forward to seeing how you progress. This set of pics makes it look a little easier than the other set that showed just the outside.

Very nice work.

OK I admit it, I've made a few grilles before . Worst thing about stainless is how hard it is - tough to cut and a real son-of-a B to polish - but once it's done, it'll never rust.
Got the inner frame mounted and started welding in the grille bars. It will need a center bar going across them to keep them steady since the 3/16" rod is kinda weebly. Haven't decided if it will be welded to the grille bars or pressed against them with a soft rubber facing. I've done it both ways before - the thing about welding a cross piece in is that it can cause a noticeable bend in the bars - decisions, decisions.........[S

They look like 3/16" round is that correct?
Did you polish them before welding?
And finally, are they shaped rather than just straight?

Great stuff! thanks for showing us.

Yep, 3/16" round and yes, I polished them before welding - good eye. ;) Yes again, the bars are straight as was the original grille - making curved bars would make for much more tedious work - beyond my patience level :(. I decided to go with welding the cross bar on the back, tacked on below the bar so the welds are not so visible from a frontal wiew point. At this point the outer frame is sanded to 80 grit, I'll polish it later so it doesn't get scratched during the rest of the fab work. Also here's a picture of a stock grille, I thought it was kinda busy looking with all the cross bars, etc., besides, mine was long gone...

I sure like how that vee thickened up, ZZ. [cl

I'll bet it has a killer look with your reworked chin, which makes me think "Stiletto", like the Italian knife.

did you find a hood ornament yet zz?

grill looks good by the way

No, I've decided to carve out a custom one, scanning my scrap pile for materials and inspiration - stay tuned...[ddd

Thanks Dr C - todays project is your fault  - ever since you planted the headlight idea in my brain I've been mulling it over, now I'm acting on it. Started making new lower pedestals from steel, they lower the headlights 3". I will incorporate the original park lights in too and sheet them in with 18ga. steel.
The weather was doing the nasty today so no outdoor pics...
