nobody is hoping that motor runs as much as me!! :D I'm not worried about it (I should be, but I am not). I have to start building my intake (although I only currently have 1 of 3 carbs...xmas put a hurting on me!) I can still get her built in the meantime though.

I built an engine test stand just for that purpose.
I deal with unknowns from time to time and don't like the disassembly process. Also can check for oil leaks.
Even at that, it's still a crap shoot as to whether they'll burn oil or not.
Something else I do is, if the oil looks pretty good, I'll run the engine for about an hour before changing it to new. Probably nothing to it but, it's always worked for me. (the proverbial belly button opinion deal) :p

Assuming it's in perfect running condition, you should still drop the pan and clean out whatever is in there before trying to start it. Hopefully you don't find any metal in it, but I guarantee you'll find dirt and/or some other crazy stuff. After that's done, you could try priming the oil and see if it builds, then put a little oil in each cylinder and do a compression test. You can find out a lot without disassembling the whole thing.

I knew a guy back in the 90s that had a Chevy with a 350. A few of us that knew about cars found out he had never changed the oil. When we pulled the plug, nothing came out. We had to drive a screwdriver through the junk in the bottom of the pan to make a hole for the oil to come out. Same with a flathead Ford I did a couple years ago. I pulled the pan, and it had about an inch and a half of dirt/tar lining the pan on all sides. I wonder why it smoked so bad.

A guy at work pulled the pan on a modern engine, and found a drum brake adjuster in it. The whole thing, the screw in the middle, and both notches that slip on the ends. It was really beat up after I don't know how many thousands of miles in there.

dropped the oil pan today...I have to say, it was shockingly perfect. No metal bits, no water, no rust...oil was even in good shape. looked in all the covers at the cam, etc...great shape. Painted the pan while it was out, moving on....

wondering if anyone on here has the capabilities (or knows someone) who can make me some intake flanges (accurately). I can cut the cast flanges off and send them for sizing...they need to be made out of 1/2" steel....any takers, name your price! [P

There is a few of us on RRR with Plasma cnc machines.

I recommend Old Iron....hehehe.

Kool looking ride.

Thanks a lot Pops  [ddd
My machine is only a 40 amp Hypertherm. If I had a new Hypertherm 85 I'd be glad to cut them.
Actually, I have a friend with a water jet machine I was thinking about, It'll cut 3" plate like butter.

Old Iron,
You're welcome, I like to help a guy out when I can.
A water jet system would be nice wouldn't it? You'd feel like you needed to keep it busy tho and that sounds like work to me.

jdybowski, I can cut your flanges for you but the freight from New Mexico to New York would be too high to justify it I would think..
You should be able to find someone in your area that can cut them. Check with the steel supply house they will know someone if they don't do it.

Good luck with your project. It's going to be sweet.

yes, 4 flanges...on a side note, I need 2 flanges for for weber 40 idf carb bases as well...1/4" plate for these. Shipping won't be an issue, they should all fit in a small priority flat rate box...$6 each way. I contacted a couple places locally with cnc machines, but have yet to hear from either of them. Just thought someone here might want to earn a couple clams.

Size won't be an issue but I think weight might be?

If you have someone local with a waterjet that should be the ticket.

ok, update on the flanges. I contacted about 8 local shops, with only one reply. However, they want to charge me 150 per hour, with an estimated 2 hours. LMFAO. No thanks. I also found a shop on the web called Hells Gate Hot Rods. about $85 for the set. LAST CALL...if anyone on here wants my money to go to them, give me a shout before I go with Hells Gate. Like I said, I would rather hook someone up here.
Ordered my second Weber carb today, as well as, cloth spark plug wires and hardware, some gaskets, etc. The only thing really holding me up at this point is making the intake. As soon as that's done, I should be good to go and see if she fires/runs.
Went to the DMV, got all my paperwork to start the registration process. ugh. Problem is, I have no paperwork on the car. No bill of sale. No transferrable reg., nothing. Wish me luck.
