Slow but steady wins the race?

Getting there... I need to get a couple nylon washers for the brake pedal assembly, and make a spacer but other than that its done other than paint.

Working on the steering column, but the hole I cut was too small, so now I'm trying to sort out a good way to cut a nice round hole, but thats not a big deal really...

Got my steering shaft from the fiero, I think I'll be able to use it at the column end and then go double D 3/4 to the u-joint (I'll have to buy) at the steering box.

For Mercurymac, I took some pics of the hub cap adapters, they are crude but will be functional.

DR. Thank you, dang fine Imagineering, making external hubcaps into internals of a different size. Now if you could only make my wheels accept any form of hubcap, we'd all be laughing.
Keep on tinkering.

I can try to help fit/adapt something if you like!

I assume the ranger ones are aluminum though yes? (You are running ranger wheels if I remember correctly?) I was lucky in picking ones that are stainless steel so I can easily weld to them, but its not impossible to come up with an easy solution to make the adapter plates for each piece and make it work...

I like the hubcap mod you came up with. I'll put that away in the memory bank for future use.
Shows another way to skin a a a a, Oh well, cat [ddd
Who done your lazer work?

even if you were adapting an aluminum cap to a steel one or vice a versa you can use the 3M panel bond adhesive to join them. You will never get them back apart. Good idea on the caps DR. [P

Well, mostly reverse progress lately, but moving in a direction is good I guess.
I didn't like the way I had the column, I noticed the hole where I want the steering shaft to come out was not centered with the column, which made the column sit on an angle. Last night I cut out the dash area (also to remove the spots for the stock pontiac gauges) and I moved it over a couple inches to the left, now its centered with both the seat base (pretty close) and also the hole in the firewall.

Question is, will I be ok with the steering wheel being only a few inches awas from the door... I guess I'll post it up in the Q/A section so I can see how close you guys run the wheel to the driver's door...? The setup I am looking at right now puts me about 10" from the door to the center of the column, which I think is about 3" further over than stock if my memory is serving me today...

If you're running power steering, you can run a smaller diameter steering wheel.
With a 13" wheel that leaves ya 3.5" from the door, which should be fine.

Here's my 2 cents DR.
You said the your column is centered on your seat. That's important. As long as you have clearence for both hands on the wheel, working the blinker lever and turning the wheel with out catching on anything you should be fine.
Can you go to a smaller wheel to gain some more space?
When you sit in the truck. How does it feel? Plus once you start driving it the layout should feel more natural to you.

This is one of the issue on my build as well. 18" steering wheel:eek: But I like the looks of the old large wheels so I have some figuring out to doas well.
Post up some pics if you can.
Torchie.

My wheel is close to the door as well, with my elbow rested on the window Frame I can have my fingers on the wheel, probably 3" or so of clearance. It would be better with a smaller steering wheel, but I really dislike small wheels on a stock ratio. My race car had a smaller sparco wheel but it was barely one turn to full lock

My wheel is probably less than 3" from the door. That's with a 15" wheel but there's lots of room. I can just fit my hand between the turn signal lever and the door. It fits my mitts though, so that's all that matters.

Thanks for all the input guys, I'm going to throw the seat in again and sit in it to make sure everything feels right and that the chest to wheel distance is similar to what my car has as well... It just really looked weird moving it over that far, because of the cab being so tapered from back to front...

The plan is a 13" wheel, with a cardboard assisted template it didnt look too small, and gives me some knee room as well.

I'm thinking under launch, the motor should rock away from the steering shaft, so I can probably move it back a little to the center of the cab which puts the steering shaft closer to the head... hmmm

I'll try to snap some pics too.
