I am planning to put an in-line six into a Triumph (SMALL CAR) and would like to keep the hot exhaust away from the brake booster and brake fluid. I prefer a chevy theme. Any ideas for chevy engines 1950 or newer that have a separate intake manifold (not cast with the head) and manifolds on the passenger side? Thanks.

Early 250 Chevys are non integral heads, meaning the until around '77 the intake manifold is separate and not cast in the head. If you can find it , Wayne made a performance head that took the carb on the drivers side and exhausted out the the passenger side. Even if you run a regular head you can get a block hugger style header for it that will give you the clearance your looking for. The 250s all have a v8 bolt pattern unlike the earlier 235 which has a six cylinder pattern. Stock motors make around 110 horse power. A better choice might be the Pontiac OHC six. They make around 200 hp. Similar in size.

If you put an exhaust wrap on the exhaust manifold or headers you can put your hand on the pipes and not even get burned. Plus you can use metal shielding or insulating cloth on your master cylinder and lines and have no problems.

That motor is gonna be taller than the car! :D I love my 300I6. Not sure how that'll work for ya in a Triumph though - a lot of low end grunt, but only need to wind it up to about 2,500 to max your HP. Guess you can just leave it in 3rd gear all the time ;). It'll be different.

Thanks for your comments; 300 Ford it is!

Just snagged three (matching E-9's!) 45DCOE Webber Sidedrafts pulled off a Jaguar XKE in 1979. So the patina is about 40 years old. Shine-em up? or rebuild and leave patina in place? (--always a struggle). This week, bought an Infiniti Q45 Differential (3.69:1 LSD). Now looking for a pre-87 Ford 300, also a Mustang 5.0L T5 trans, also a Chevy S-10 4-cyl 2wd t5 trans (for the forward-positioned shifter on tail-shaft). Anyone near Cincinnati with stuff, feel free to send a note. :D

Why pre-87? Trying to stay away from EFI? I have 87 300 in my pickup. Ripped the EFI out and put a carb on it (too many fried sensors). The injectors were in the intake, not the head. Not sure about the 90's. Head chambers may be different.

Yup, I was going pre-EFI. But yesterday won a carb head off Ebay for $33.00 supposedly remanufactured with new valves. --We'll see. I plan to run electric fuel pump, so 87 or newer block will do fine. There was an urban legend that block castings after 84 were from Mexico and somehow inferior, but cannot find anything more than one comment.

It's a 300 I6, overbuilt and nearly indestructible. IMO, the best truck motor Ford ever built. The EFI version has split header style exhaust manifolds and the casting for the mechanical fuel pump is still on the block, but the holes are not machined. Would the EFI lower manifold be useable with those carbs?

lower EFI intake could work if chopped

the DCOE's are strictly side draft, so I'll either purchase the Clifford triple side draft intake, or do as you suggest.... use the EFI intake as a starting point for chop & re-position for an all-horizontal runners (well..actually about an 11 degree slant upward... apparently Webers like a bit of a slope.
