Yep
I will pay you to bring my crap and use the hotrod as a daily driver
Things could be a lot worse.

is the high pressure fuel pump
from the dealer here it is $3800 installed at the shop
I am putting the truck in storage until I can buy my own part
for $1000 and then have it installed for $500
my wife is coming to get me

Does the lift pump check out? A lot of times those go bad and it kills the injection pump.

I am amazed that I have not gotten ****ed off about this
Either I am calming down in my old age or just getting better at controlling my temper

I would say having a good friend like I R Pops helps keep the stress level down considerably.

a year ago i replaced the stock lift pump with a FASS DDRP because of the common failures with the stock pump
(it was working fine)
it has a 4 year warranty
i also replaced the APPS sensor because i didnt like having the check engine light glowing (the truck ran fine)
i will buy a certified rebuilt /new /aftermarket vp44
the truck has a mild VAN AAIKEN bus controller
when i actually have any money i will hire the most highly rated Diesel mechanic i can find in the denver area and have him test the fuel system components
if the lift pump is the culprit i will get a different one and then the vp44
of course i will have to hire a wrecker to take it to whatever shop i find.
this **** got expensive right off the bat.
but then i will have my beloved dodge back in action.

Man I wish all of this happened a bit more south. I could grave your rig in my next trip and bring it to ya. I want be getting any further north then the Grand Canyon tho.

Sorry about your luck man!

Are you running gauges?
I had a vp44 go out on my '98. I boutpght it and replaced myself. It was a PITA as they require s "special tool". My special tool ended up being bars, ratchet straps and a tree.

Like others have said, the lift pump going out will kill the vp44. Problem is the vp44 can run fairly strong for so,e time without any indication that the lift pump isn't working.
Lost the lift pump in my 03 and put in an air dog. It lasted about a year till a seal let fuel into the motor frying it.
Easy fix, but frustrating.
$3800 seems awfully high for the vp33, even with the parts being $1200. Labor isn't that bad.

if the FASS DDRP02 lift pump is dead and that killed the vp44 (doubtful but possible)
i will replace the lift pump that is under a 4 year warranty.
and replace the vp44 with a bosch certified rebuilt one
the entire project is only about 3 hours
and it is possible to do it in the yard it is being stored at.
i dunno
so many logistics to figure out
mostly money.....

There is no magic to replace the VP 44. It just bolts on. You will need a gear puller, like a steering wheel puller, or balancer puller. There is a key in the shaft, that is easy to knock out when you go back with it. There no timing this pump, just bolts on. Then it can be hard to get all the air out of the system. We used to start them with gas on a rag. Take the air intake off the manifold. Put some gas on a rag, have someone crank the engine while you hold the rag near the open intake. It will suck the fumes in and run. Be very careful not to loose the rag, or let the engine runaway.

i WILL be installing a gauge AND a dummy light.
i never look at gauges but i DO notice a sudden bright red alarm light. :D

My bride and I just drove to Denver and tomorrow morning I will test the fuel system and pinpoint the problem.

Then at least I will know what I am looking at money wise.

i have a 01
starts runs fine but get on the highway and it jerks and pops puffs of smoke ect.
replaced the fuel filters and the fass ddrp02 seems fine(turn the key and it runs for 25 seconds)
got the p 1693 pecu 0216 codes
connected a pressure test gauge to the shrader and got 20psi at idle and 16psi at WOT
but i didnt have a long enough hose to test pressure driving.
this is a stock truck with nothing but a van aaken D500 bus controller

Remove the Van Aaken controller and hook it up the factory way?
I bought my truck new in 01. At 500 miles I installed a Puck Diablo it went bad in less than a 100 miles so I switched to a BD and have had no more controller issues.
At 60,000 the lift pump quit, fried the VP44, installed a Thoroughbred Diesel rebuild and an Airdog The truck has 215,000 mile now running strong.

I'm lucky my 7.3 has no high pressure fuel pump and just keeps chugging away with 250,000 miles. Not a drip of oil anywhere and uses about a quart in 3000 miles. It does need new glow plugs though, prolly have to do that before winter.

i didnt even think about removing the box.[S
now i am back home in nebraska scraping money together for the vp44....

It doesn't cost anything to unplug the box and see but I would think
you would get an ECM related code if it was bad.

Just my 2 cents worth.
