I lived through 1984 (the year... not the movie), and it didn't look anything like the movie.
I worked at Ford's Engineering Computer Center during the Y2K debacle with everyone panicking that 2000 was going to be the end of civilization (well everyone outside of Ford, apparently!), and I lived through it, too.
Lived through the Mayan Calendar end date (twice?)
So yeah..... it sure seems like anyone could pick a random date and time and be as close to right as the next guy.
The closest I've come to "doomsday" was when we were driving up to Michigan one time when the Niagra power grid went down over a weekend. No power from mid Ohio all the way through Michigan. No ATM's, no gas, nothing was working unless run via generator. It was one freaky weekend. Fortunately, I had just topped off my tank apparently just before it happened, otherwise I wouldn't have made it.
I watch these "Doomsday Preppers" shows and really think that I wouldn't WANT to survive after the disasters they are talking about. I like my creature comforts too much.
