Which oil filter?!

I saw a thread recently where peeps said Fram was 1 of the worst filters... which 1 do you prefer?!

Seems like a lot of people on different forums like Wix filters.

Wix & Purolater. Fram may have the largest advertising program, but not the best quality engineering department.

I've been running Bosch, mainly because they are black and the sticker comes off. Besides that, I trust the name and our local Advance Auto had one cut apart so you could see the internals. No cardboard like the Fram they had also on display.

Wix is good, and I have Purolator on my daily. Basically anything but Fram.

But your engine is worth more than $14! Pay a little more now or a lot later.
I use WIX, AC, or Puralator.

As for cost, I found out something. I was at Autozone, buying oil and a filter for my 27, and I had a Bosch filter in my hand. Store Manager comes over and starts bugging me about the monthly oil change special they are running with a Fram filter and 5 quarts of Valvoline oil. I told him I do not use Fram filters but he said " I have the authority to substitute another brand filter and still give you the same deal !" So I grabbed 5 quarts of Valvoline oil and with my Bosch filter he did some keyboard punching on his computer and I got the stuff I wanted at the sale price.

Just thought I would pass that along and maybe your local Autozone will do the same thing if you ask the manager.

I have found the same....

They let me choose....Bosch or Purolator....wix if they have them and A/C if nothing else....so far no worries.....

I still can't even buy the Oil & filter for what the local dealer charges to change my oil in my daily...

So... 117,000 miles and still great...

I haven't tried that but I did notice that you could buy the oil/filter combo cheaper than the oil by itself!

My advise... Change em often. An engine that is burning fuel properly and is appropriatly ventilated should not make as much grit. Carbon = grit.

You can have the best filter and have a filter bypass circuit built into the engine. An example is a SBC from 1974. Look at one of the filter adapters and you will see a bypass valve.

I used to modify my SBC engines to have 100% filtered oil... Because they don't. I'm talking about the older version with two piece rear seals. I'm not familiar with the one piece seal generation of SBC. I played with the oil system in the day to learn what worked. I got to the point that under hard off road conditions I was able to preserve the Babbitt on the bearings so well I reused them on rebuilds. There is a trick to doing it so don't just chuck em back in. Same engine bored and built three times with same bearings. Babbitt had no wear to speak of when I sold the truck.

I also did not wait to do oil changes at 3000 miles...

I use Purolator or AC Delco mostly. I learned that the Walmart brand (Tech?) gets better reviews than Fram. I've run them before with no ill effects. Wont use Fram.

I have used Fram forever and never had any of the problems everyone talks about? I guess I am just lucky or I change them before they go bad.
