I've thought about wood frame rails using lam-beams. Any opinions from the wood butchers out there?
BTW the cars pictured are wonderful to look at.

I am a wood butcher, or cabinetmaker. I was thinking about wood frame, or wood / aluminium combination. I think it would be strong enough with the right design, the mounting points backed or reinforced by alu, etc. There was quite a few all wood cars out there in the old days, one is on the web made by a boat builder. There is the new Splinter Supercar being built right now,
all wood laminations , everything other than engine trans is wood , google it, pretty interesting site.

What the heck is that, why is it so big, and what is under that huge bonnet?

I remember reading in a book that in the early days, some rule changes, trying to restrict speed by limiting bore size caused some really different looking cars, they had a photo of one similar to that - tiny bore but a really long stroke.
