After lots of internet reading and youtube videos I tackled changing out the pistons. I was very nervous about it as the stories I read about not getting the pin in the rod all the way before it locks in had me real worried.

My jig set up on the bench

And all eight done with out a hitch.

Astro van steering shaft

Someone on here, somewhere posted a thread on using an Astro van intermediate steering shaft instead of buying expensive steering joints.

Here is the shaft on the Essex

The trunion joint on my shaft was roached

Now cuz my steering box and shaft were out of a pre 78 GM Caprice the steering box has the large 36 spline input shaft. The Astro van has the small 30 spline shaft so the lower half of the shaft and joint won't fit the box. As it turns out if you use the lower pre 78 shaft and rag joint the upper Astro van shaft and joint slide right in.:D

Cost me $20. and an hour to fix this part of the steering.

Once again it proves this is the best site on the net

Nice job matching up the steering shaft parts.

You are most welcome to the tip I dropped more than once. Glad it got you close. :D[clI ended up stretching mine using an after market DD shaft and a piece of the tube from the old original S10 shaft.

And the rod end fix for SGI.

Forgive my laziness and not searching your thread but SGI didn't pass inspection on the hiem joints? Or did they let it go? This has been a concern for me ever since you were taking the Essex in for inspection as I'll likely deal with the same people.
I've got hiem joints. Big inch and a quarter buggers that weren't cheap and I'll be damned if a bushed joint would be any stronger.
If you don't mind giving me the low down on what transpired with SGI that would be great. PM me if you prefer.
On another note. You have been a busy man. I remember when you had a body and a frame then next thing I know you were driving the damn thing.
Now you have rebuilt the engine.
Good lord I need to pull my socks up man.
Good work [cl

Finally had some ambition to work on the Rat this weekend. Work has been absolutely crazy with the extreme cold weather, everyone is using propane at alarming rate.

Have been tossing around what to do with the floor in the car, and decided to give a roll on truck bed liner a try. I used the Duplicolor brand, two good heavy coats and I'm real happy with the results.

I then went on to working on the drip edges. I found this old fender laying in a pasture and it became the donor metal.

The inside header above the door had to be finished as well, so building the drip edge to go all the way inside to form that header.

The header fitted in the opening.

Bead rolled the start of the drip channel into the header strip.

Truck bed liner

I have used the spray on bed liner for a couple of projects> Its sticks well and I think gives a little sound cushion as well. Nice work on your project. Very creative.[P
