All apart!

Well i have the entire motor torn down. Now for the fun! I have started scraping the gunk out, what a mes that is. That crap is really in there. I currently have it soaking in gas. Hopefully tonite I will be able to get the rest of the garbage out.

No as for the heads, not to put too much money into them would it be a good idea to just clean them up and run them as is or should I replace valves and springs?

You can get a quick indication of the condition of the valves and seats by setting the heads on their side and filling the ports with solvent. If it leaks past the valve you will need a valve job or at least lap the valves in. This won't tell you anything about the condition of the springs, guides or seals but it's a quick way to find out if they might work as is.

Hey thanks! Ill try it this afternoon!

Moronthethrottle, I see that you said Quakerstate or Penzoil can cause this buildup I usually use Valvoline. Any better?

I think Valvoline is OK. I guess I've always used Kendall 50 in racing motors and Mobil in everything else. I can't prove that Pennzoil makes engines slimy, but I've pulled several apart that the users said they always ran it, so it's an educated assumption.

As far as your heads...follow advice given, lap the valves for sure. Your # doesn't appear to be a super performance head, keep them and use 'em...they'll treat you fine on the street.

The intake may be worth $30ish(?) to one of your local Hobby Stock/Pure Stock racers IF it is non-EGR. GH10 can help on the price better than I could...been out of touch with the racers for the last few years.

So I have read online how to Lap valves, seems pretty straight forward. I just wonder is it? or is this something I should have machined like I am with the block?
Also with running these stock heads what should I bore this out to? I know I asked before but I want to make sure its still the same.

Lapping valves is as straight forward as described. It seems like there should be more to it, but it's really nothing to be afraid of.

Head work gets spendy, fast. Your heads are 60cc chamber with 1.72 intake and 1.5 exhaust. You should be able to safely increase your valve size to 1.6 exhaust and 2.02 intake, but I do not think it is necessary for your street application. Furthermore, it will cost you hundreds of dollars. No matter what you bore the block to, the heads/valves should have no troubles keeping up-at least up to 4000rpm. If you were aiming for a high performance/motorsport application I would definitely recommend better heads with bigger valves, but IMO you will be just fine with what you have.

If you want better heads, use the numbers Gearhead10 listed and try to find a stock pair for maybe $100-$200. Those heads are 76cc chambers and have 1.94 intake and 1.5 exhaust-stock. If you come across a set of heads you're not sure of, check the numbers at this site: http://www.73-87.com/chevy_ids/sbheads.htm

Working on getting the gunk out!

Well I got out to the junkyard again this morning and shopped around. i picked up an old mustang box and a drive shaft. Im still looking for a set of seats, not really sure what but nothing seems to strike me.
I spent most of the afternoon scraping, brushing, and spraying all of the caked on oil out. The block looks nice. So tomorrow morning its off to the machine shop to get bored out.

Well not a whole lot of progress tonite. I got 13 of the 16 valve springs off. Man these things are on there. I broke my valve spring compressor, so its off to Sears tomorrow to get it replaced. It probably doesnt help that I am hammering on the thing. I may try to straighten it out and see if I can limp it along to get the other 3 out.
Tomorrow,,,, More scrubbing on the heads, valves, and springs. I almost have all of the gunk out. Then its onto lapping the valves. Finally! Tuesday I pick up the block and order the master kit. and yet another trip to the junkyard.

The heads are apart! I finally got all of the springs off and the valves out. I scrubbed and scrubbed. I think they are as clean as they are going to get. I am thinking about taking a wire brush to the outside tomorrow. I want a nice surface to paint on. I also received more pictures on the frame.

The valves are lapped!

Well I spent some time wire brushing the exterior of the heads and they are just about ready to paint. I finally got up the courage to lap the valves, being that I had never done it I was a little nervous. Man I really dont know what I was worried about, its pretty much fool proof! Well I got all 16 done sprayed the heads down and now they are dryin. Tomorrow its re-assembly time. Hopefully if all goes well I will be able to pick up my block too!
