Saw a Nighthawk today. Couldn't see the bevel drive clearly,
because there is a cheap black plastic cover over it. [S
The motor/trans is VERY compact, doesn't look like
the crank sticks out too far on either end.

Here is a blowup of the bevel drive. And how do you post your pics so large Ian
Honda magna cross shaft looks simplest

Your pics are small, because you have uploaded them to the RRR server; so they appear as thumbnails.

I right click on the pic, copy the image location, then use
the Insert Image button to make it appear in my post.

This is from a 2004 Kawi SV700, whatever that is:0004 Kawasaki SV700 2 004 Kawasaki SV700

Yes, compact is good.
I like the output flange on this one, easy to bolt a sprocket to:

And the bolt on covers create mounting options.

The "trick" would be on the input shaft, adapting a sprocket to the stock splines.
If you had the parts those splines fit into, the female splines,
then you could figure a way to modify that piece to fit a sprocket for the input side.

MAYBE the splined part looks like this:

Since the bevel dive is called a "Middle Drive", and these are called
a "Middle Drive Gear", I can only assume they go together.

Easier to find stuff, when you know what it is called.

My logic in wanting to start with a shaft drive bike, was to make
sure to have the female spline part that drives the bevel gear box.

But if they are available separately, that is even better. [cl

The middle dive gear will need modification, but it is easier
to modify the outside, than to try and cut internal splines.

So use the input spline gear on the input side turn it down adapt a double row sproket or some kind of coupling then on the motor output which might be tapered another sprocket that the double row chain connects to and that part is done pluse a nice plate to bolt it all too and clean it all up.

or am I totaly off track..?

Need to do a "Reality Check" and make sure
the direction of rotation works out correctly.

I only like "Surprises", when they happen to other people.[ddd

5 speeds in Reverse doesn't sound like a real good idea.

Ya I was kind of thinking the same thing but forgot to mention it....Ill ask around I dont mind asking dumb questions.Den

Might be a bit of a trick to get the finnish plate on once the couplings are together mayby some kind of a 2 piece plate that can slip in between.

What are the chances that the Yamaha XS650,750,850,1100 etc Middle Drive boxes are all the same ?

Same deal with the Middle Drive Gear.

Interchangability would be cool. Even Detroit figured that out. Easier to find parts.

Maybe the plate gets bolted on the box first,
then the rear 1/2 of the coupling is installed.

Then once everything is lined up, the plate bolts to the frame.
